Four of our chickens, a lavender Pekin, Henny Penny, our Goldline hybrid, and our two black pekins.Lilia one of our Lavender Pekins with the chick she hatched, Snowdrop at two days old.

In 2008 we decided to keep a few chickens, making great pets and producing fresh eggs.

After all helping to build a large run in the garden Guy decided he wanted a “proper chicken”, so we got Henny Penny our large Goldline hybrid.

The children and I wanted bantams and after keeping Pekins many years ago these were our first choice.

They have been excellent little hens, we have two Black Pekins, Carys’ hen Lickarish and Glens, Silki, and two Lavender Pekins, Erin and Lilia.

Henny started us off with the egg laying and lays a beautiful large brown egg nearly every day, the bantams are good layers but also have a tendency to go broody.  Lilia sat so tight  for a month on nothing that in the end we succumbed and got a couple of eggs from a friend.  Fortunately one egg was fertile and Snowdrop popped out.  Then Lickerish & Silki went broody over the Summer and we were lucky to hatch two more chicks, Peanut and Peggy.  We have since found out that all three chicks were Cockerels (not such good luck after all) and not wanting to upset the neighbours they have had to be found new homes. We now also have Cocoa, a Black tailed Columbian, and hope to get two more pullets in the Spring.

So with fresh eggs available the majority are used to make the cakes, resulting in a golden yellow Madeira Sponge cake, the colour is unfortunately lost on the fruit and chocolate cakes but they still taste good.
