My cakes really do taste as good as they look |

In 2008 we decided to keep a few chickens, making great pets and producing fresh eggs. After all helping to build a large run in the garden Guy decided he wanted a “proper chicken”, so we got Henny Penny our large Goldline hybrid. The children and I wanted bantams and after keeping Pekins many years ago these were our first choice. They have been excellent little hens, we have two Black Pekins, Carys’ hen Tally and Glens, Silki, and two Lavender Pekins, Erin and Lilia. Henny started us off with the egg laying and lays a beautiful large brown egg. We decided to expand our little flock and bought another three hybrids, Cocoa, a Black tailed Columbian, Peggy, a Black Star, and Indigo, our Skyline, who lays beautiful blue eggs. The bantams are good layers but also have a tendency to go broody; Tally even hatched and brooded 4 ducklings for us this year, so we had to build a duck run next to the chickens. The ducks are such fun waddling around the garden and dabbling in any puddles they can find.
So with fresh eggs available the majority are used to make the cakes, resulting in a golden yellow Madeira Sponge cake, the colour is unfortunately lost on the fruit and chocolate cakes but they still taste good. |
